Wallows Release Refreshing New Single ‘Coffin Change’

Ahead of their upcoming EP ‘More’ due to be released on 28th March 2025,Wallows have released a second single ‘Coffin Change’ which is track number three of seven. It is made up of addictive vocals and dreamy guitar soundscapes, combining the bands signature talents with a new sound.

The track opens with a hooking guitar riff and an instant indie rock feel to it. Braeden Lemasters takes the vocals for this track, a rarer occurrence than having Dylan Minnette as lead. He can clearly create emotion through his voice and tone, aiding in the nostalgic feeling the single carries.

A steady drum beat runs consistently behind the verse before adding to the mellow indie rock aspect in the chorus as well as more dynamic elements turning to more cymbals. The chorus is chanted emotively, with an impressive showcase in vocal range. It is easily remembered with a shift in key and repeated lyrics you can't help but want to join in with. The difference in production is evident here, a sense of yearning is created through rawer sounding vocals that remind me of listening to a demo.

This layered guitar continues into the second verse accompanied by lyrics that carry an existential theme. Before the bridge, we are treated to an intricate tempo change. Slowing the vocals and riffs before being bought right back into a fast paced instrumental. The keys and continuous chant builds the song before a quick fade out and a final unexpected hit of the drums.

The ‘More’ EP follows Wallows 2024 album Model. I went into this new single with the expectation of it following a similar style and genre but it has given us the complete opposite. ‘Coffin Change’ is an example of Wallow's willingness to explore other sounds with an impressive result of something refreshing, interesting and memorable. This single feels like Wallows have returned to their roots a little more but clearly shows their progression in talent alongside. They’ve created a track unique in their discography yet clearly still authentic to their sound. ‘Coffin Change’ is captivating with a fresh feeling.

I’m looking forward to what else this EP has to offer.
