Unbound - Year of Confession - Song Review

Tom Petty told us the waiting is the hardest part. Year of Confession abruptly halted the wait and released a new single, “Unbound,” their first release in 18 years. We’ve been hungry for new music from this incredible Long Island Hardcore Scene band and man did they deliver! Year of Confession describe themselves as a unique brand of metal, rock, and hardcore music and “Unbound” features all three genres masterfully blended.

“Unbound” is an absolute banger. It’s hard to put a finger on the best aspect of the song as the instruments, lyrics, and vocals each hold their own. The nasty bass line at the beginning is dark, gritty, and in-your-face. It powerfully sets the scene for the forthcoming emotional message of trials, tribulations, and liberation. The guitars then begin emitting electrifying riffs that seem to be an eclectic mix of Trivium meets Iron Maiden. I definitely catch inspiration from Phil Anselmo (Pantera) on the vocals. The drums maintain an infectious groove you can feel in your soul especially as we are taken into the breakdown. It’s here where we are gifted with growls so insane that Alex Terrible would think he appeared on the track.
The different layers in “Unbound” blend seamlessly as the song inspires us to rise above the past and find the strength to let go. It’s through this journey we can break free and find redemption. “Unbound” isn’t just a song, it’s a roadmap to transformation and transcendence.

As the group of high school friends’ hiatus ends, Year of Confession is recording a new album and plans to release more in 2025. According to an interview by noecho.net, live performances are on the radar but the band is trying to hold off on live performances until they start releasing new music. Year of Confession has shared the stage with bands such as All that Remains, Trivium, and Dope to name a few. When Year of Confession retakes the stage, be sure to hydrate because the crowd energy will be insane. I’ll see you in the pit.
