Born of Osiris Release New Single + Visualizer "A Mind Short Circuiting"

They say lightning never strikes the same place twice, but when it comes to Palatine, IL titans Born Of Osiris’s new track “A Mind Short Circuiting,” that old adage couldn’t be more wrong. 

Straight out the gate, you’re greeted with a deceptively peaceful clean-channel guitar intro that makes you feel like you’re a baby floating peacefully up the river Nile, but longtime BOO Crue members will know that’s only going to last about 13 seconds before you’re smacked in the face by the most merciless riffage you’ve ever heard in your life.

Following 2021’s more experimental record Angel Or Alien, A Mind Short Circuiting is a refreshing return to Born’s beginnings, hearkening back to the sound of their debut album A Higher Place which was one of my first forays into heavy music. The year was 2009. People used to buy music on these small ancient discs called CD’s (I know, sounds crazy) and I remember buying that album, listening to it on the CD player at my Grandma’s house (shoutout Nancy), and immediately levitating off the ground because I had never heard anything like it before.

A Mind Short Circuiting has that same indescribable magic that made so many fall in love with A Higher Place, in the first place. Do I relate to every word of this track? Maybe not, but do the lyrics invoke vivid imagery? Are they memorable? Do they sound cool and fit the vibe of the instrumental? Absolutely. Besides, relatable lyricism is not what I listen to BOO for. There are plenty of bands out there who write lyrics about everyday struggles. When I listen to Born, I’m listening because I want to escape to another realm. I’m listening because I want to feel like Anubis is yelling at me over the intercom while I pilot a starfighter through an asteroid field and my warpdrive engines are about to overheat. I listen for the nasty mechanical vocals, groovy riffs and time signature changes galore, exemplified by guitarists Lee McKinney and Nick Rossi when they truly start cooking at the 0:40 mark of this song as frontman Ronnie Canizaro bellows “Stuck inside a slow storm.” 

Something that has always stood out to me about Born Of Osiris is their ability to pack in these massive, melodic synth-backed choruses which are not only catchy and memorable, but also have little to no clean vocals at all, allowing anyone to sing along to it just by yelling the words. And if you’ve ever seen this band on tour, you know just how flawlessly that translates live. Both Canizaro and synth player/backing vocalist Joe Buras are like the Batman and Robin of singin’ dirty, with Ronnie typically providing the main gritty screams during the chorus and Joe coming in with the clean-vocal-assist to back him up. But in the case of A Mind Short Circuiting’s chorus, it’s straight up Oreo double-stuffed screamy goodness from start to finish as they let out a thunderous “Dark clouds of pouring rain, Wrapped in a cyclone. Falling out, I’m going insane.”

Whether you’re new to the 'Crue or you’ve been rockin’ with ’em since the Warped Tour days, Mind is roughly a four minute and 20 second crash course on everything that has made them one of the greatest staples in modern metal, and I truly look forward to catching some shots of this one live. The song is out now via Sumerian Records’s YouTube channel or anywhere you stream music. “'A Mind Short Circuiting' embodies the essence of our roots,” the band shares, “The combination of ethereal melodies with down-tuned guitars has helped inspire lyrics that evoke darker emotions.
